Subject:Citrus Crate label w/ CatalinaDate:Sunday, 11/08/2009 7:58 PM PST
Message:I own an extensive collection of vintage citrus crate labels. (circa 1905-1955)
These labels represent citrus growers and shippers from my state of Arizona and help document the citrus industry in Arizona prior to the urbanization of central Arizona.
One of the labels in my archive features a full color illustration of a Catalina in flight over an orange grove.
In the background is an illustration of Camelback Mtn. which is a regional landmark in the Phoenix area.
The number on the plane is 71. The name of the fruit packing company using this label was Landon Fruit Company. Can you add any info. in the way of background concerning the illustration?
Was a "Landon" family member ever connnected to a PBY squadron, perhaps a pilot? Were PBY units asigned to any region near Phoenix or perhaps Roosevelt Lake.
I have heard that portions of the aircraft were built/assembled in Goodyear, Arizona
